I was a Skinny 145lb Shy Kid

I wasn't born with big muscles or strength to match them. I had more of an athletic build and was quick. But I lacked the things I wanted most, which were muscle and strength. 

The Time I Developed Scoliosis

When I was 14 years old, my mom noticed that a part of my stomach didn't look straight. We went to the doctor and after an examination, he doctor said I had scoliosis. And I'm sure you can see what that is just by looking at the picture. This, of course, was taken a little later when it progressed a bit, but you get the idea. The thing with scoliosis is that doctors don't know why it continues to turn slowly on its own. If it is severe enough, like mine was,s then you eventually have to wear a brace to stop its progression. 

3 Months of Physio

The next 3 months were dedicated to me doing certain stretches to see if they would be able to slow or stop the progression of my spine. But sadly, this didn't work. I would need to wear "the body armor," as I used to call it, and kids at school called it. Because, as you're going to see ,it's pretty much just that.

From Neck to Waist, twenty-three hours a day

No longer than a week after, I was told to see a specialist at Sick Kids Hospital in Toronto to get my body brace molded. I would be one of the first ones in Canada to start wearing this new method of bracing to stop the spine from turning. But the irritating part I had to wear it 23 hours a day. The one hour I was able to take off, I would shower and then also spend 15 minutes stretching. And I had to do this for almost 4 years. Now, just for clarification, this is not me in the picture. I was too ashamed and shy to take a picture in the body brace I was wearing because I struggled with it. But now I wish I had to serve as a reminder of the strength you build from the adversities you face. But this brace is IDENTICAL to the one I was wearing, except mine actually went higher. Literally from collarbone to my waist, I was wrapped in this for twenty-three hours every day. 

Four Years of Hell

For about four years, I had worn this every day. And during those years, I was going to high school, so you can imagine how some days went. But luckily for the most part, I had great friends. But there were enough days when I had skin rashes from the lack of air and friction from the brace. I would get muscle pain from the stiffness of not being able to be more mobile. I would also pull my neck muscles at times again because of the lack of mobility. But eventually the day came when I could finally take it off. And what I thought was going to be the end of the suffering ended up being another hole I had to get out of.

I Was Told I Could Never Lift Weights

I remember going to the doctor for the last time and being happy because I would be able to finally start lifting weights and build the physique I wanted. But when I asked the specialist when I would be able to start lifting weights, he told me never. He said at most I could lift light weight, but because my spine was crooked he said I wouldn't be able to. At the time I was devastated but it's a good thing I could be stubborn and I don't like to listen.  

I Decided To Take My Power Back

I remember being irritated and angry and then sad. For a few weeks, I kind of just went about my day, being aggravated that this happened to me. Even back then, I had the mindset to push through and pursue, but those words coming from the specialist stopped me in my tracks. He was a specialist and knew what he was talking about. Why would he be wrong? But I questioned his answers. Something inside told me to just go try and see for myself. And it's a good thing I was stubborn and I did, because if I hadn't, I might have been the elephant tied around the wooden stick. 

You Are Always In Control

From that point on, with many hurdles and numps and still dealing with back pain for several years after that progressively subsided, I went from 145lbs to my biggest at 215lbs. I gained loads of strength, put on a lot of muscle naturally, and built a physique I was proud of. But the most important thing of all that I attained was my mindset. The capability to know that I always have the power. And the only way it is ever gone is if I give it away. It can never be lost, never be stolen, only misplaced, and I am the only one who is able to find it. And the same goes for you.  

The Richest Place Is The Graveyard

I always like to tell people my favourite quote whenever they are struggling with something because it always gives them the answer they will need, no matter the situation. 

“The graveyard is the richest place on earth, because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.”

Life is really too short for you to be worrying if you will succeed or not. You will only ever know if you take action. So take the first step.
